At first glance, volunteering may seem like a simple, almost casual act of service. Yet, for me, it has been one of the most profound and transformative experiences of my life.

For over a decade, I have served as a volunteer at the Igreja Batista Memorial de Alphaville (IBMA) — a vibrant Christian community with more than 10,000 attendees and hundreds of volunteers engaged across multiple ministries. Through this experience, I’ve learned that volunteering is not merely about giving time; it’s an exchange — one in which you offer your skills and receive back growth, relationships, and meaning.

I have always been drawn to the arts. In addition to being a researcher and professor, I am also a photographer and videographer. Yet, my volunteer journey at IBMA began in another artistic realm: music.
In my youth, I once dreamed of becoming a professional musician. Though my career eventually took a different direction, I found joy and purpose in using that passion to serve — playing the guitar in services, concerts, and large-scale productions.

Over the years, I have taken part in Easter and Christmas musicals featuring more than 500 volunteers, and even performed alongside international artists. These events, both in scope and production quality, have often resembled Broadway-level performances.
Of course, such excellence demands commitment — countless rehearsals, sound checks, and logistical coordination. As my schedule grew more demanding, I transitioned into another area I deeply enjoy: photography.

Today, I contribute to the IBMA Communication Ministry, a creative team of talented professionals — photographers, videographers, designers, and content producers — who build and sustain the church’s public presence with remarkable quality.
Many of them hold positions in major companies and media networks, yet they dedicate part of their weekends to volunteer work, producing beautiful imagery and cinematic-quality videos that tell the story of our community.

Being a volunteer has taught me that service is a form of learning.
I’ve learned about collaboration, leadership, and humility. I’ve seen executives and business leaders serve by directing traffic in the parking lot, and young creatives discover their potential through art and teamwork.

So, if you think volunteering might be tedious or insignificant, I invite you to reconsider.
It’s not only an act of giving — it’s a profound way of becoming more human.
