Let me start with a clarification: the photograph at the top of this post isn’t mine — it’s an award-winning image captured by my former student (and now colleague) Renata Joia.
Over more than twelve years of teaching in the fields of arts, communication, photography, and multimedia production, I’ve had the privilege of working with countless talented students. Many of them have gone on to achieve remarkable success — some have become lifelong friends, others trusted professional collaborators.
With this post, I am beginning a new series tentatively titled “Students I’m Proud to Have Taught”, where I will share stories of former students whose journeys continue to inspire me both personally and professionally.
Today, I’d like to highlight Renata Joia, a former student from the Technical Photography Program at Etec Carapicuíba, whose growth and achievements have made all of us — faculty and peers alike — immensely proud.
Renata joined the program in her thirties, courageously changing careers to pursue photography. From the very beginning, she demonstrated passion, focus, and artistic sensitivity — qualities that have since become her professional signature.
Today, Renata is an internationally awarded photographer with an impressive body of work. You can learn more about her story on her website: rjoiafotografia.com.br.
Even though I am a photographer myself, I occasionally hire professionals to photograph my family — and Renata is one of the few people I trust with that role. There’s something profoundly meaningful about allowing another artist to capture what I love most, through their unique perspective.
It’s also a way of supporting and recognizing specialized artistry, and of giving myself the freedom to simply be present, without worrying about production or editing.
Renata’s career has reached remarkable heights. She has won international photography awards and even spoken at “Fotografar,” Brazil’s most prestigious photography fair.
What makes this especially moving is that I remember when she first attended that event — as a student, sitting in the audience, deeply inspired by the speakers. I can only imagine that day she made a quiet promise to herself: one day, I’ll be on that stage. And she made it happen.

My own contribution to her education was primarily through courses in image editing, yet our paths crossed again years later when I produced a video for her in 2020, during her participation in a photography congress.
Although my production techniques have evolved since then, that video still holds special meaning — it marked an important moment in her artistic journey.
Most recently, Renata photographed my family once again, this time for a newborn session featuring my youngest daughter.
Few people realize how specialized that field is — newborn photography requires specific certifications and training, which Renata has mastered with great care and professionalism.

Renata Joia is far more than a former student. She is a talented artist, a recognized figure in Brazilian photography, and a living example of dedication, reinvention, and passion.
I am proud to have been a small part of her story — and grateful to continue witnessing her success.
